Government grants are sums of money given by the government to its citizens who have a specific need for the money in order to do something positive. Small business grants are given to people like a gift of money or like an inheritance of government money, with no need to pay anything back. Perhaps this is the most popular part of government money, the fact that the money comes to you tax free, with no expectations or strings attached. However, this money is not given out to just anyone and everyone. You must apply for a small business grant in order to qualify and most often they are not given federally, they are usually distributed via the state government.

Small business grants can become confusing in this manner, and because of all of the specific qualifying factors, many people would rather not bother and that has become another way of weeding out the people who don’t need or deserve the money.
The only way to be certain that you will or will not get the grant is by following the application guidelines and filling out the various applications for various small business grants. What this means is make sure you meet all of the requirements for that specific grant before applying. If a grant is solely for a single mother, a married man is not able to get this grant and shouldn’t apply. Since small business grants are not only distributed by the government but also by private foundations and various corporations, it may take time to find the right one for you and go through the application process.
